Rising property taxes hurt homeowners
Rising property taxes are hurting homeowners and often requiring the homeowner to either pay their property taxes or their mortgage.
In parts of California, Massachusetts, and Virginia, prices of houses doubled since 2000 and so did the property taxes collected.
In some cases people face payments on property taxes that are as high or higher than their house payment.
As a result, Washington state lawmakers capped property taxes at 1%, something voters said they wanted. New Jersey cut property taxes 20% but they still average $6,333 per homeowner, the highest in the nation. Florida, Illinois and Indiana have either already approved caps or are in the process of caps, cuts or both.
Local governments get a lot of their revenues from property taxes and are talking about making tough choices about services to cut. The money they got used to receiving looks increasingly like it will diminish along with falling housing prices.
